Module 5

Ashley,
I have always enjoyed reading your blogs. You have so much detail and you are so clear with what you are were writing about. I think that it is so important to have Early Childhood. Reading your information only made it more clear on why it is needed for children. I think that as teachers we are going to struggle at this age of teaching these children because some have never been in a school setting. I think that it was really good experience for you that you were able to see some of the parent teacher conferences. Some people including myself have never had the opportunity to witness those in the classroom we have observed in. People who have not been able to sit in with the conferences might be nerve racking for when their first conferences come a long because they have never watched what has happened in the past. Good luck to you!! -Ashley Milam

Charity,
It sounds like this class and all of the observations went really well for you this quarter! It sounds like you have really learned a lot from this experience and gained a lot of knowledge. I have enjoyed reading your work throughout the quarter. I think that it was awesome that you were able to sit in during an IEP meeting. I have always wanted to do that to see how the parents react, teachers, etc. I think that will prepare you for future meetings inside the school districts. To your recent post in module five, that is such a sad experience. It does show a lot for all of the teachers to go along with their day. I think that a lot of one on one with the children should be happening to make sure that they are okay or if they need to talk. It is not only so difficult for the family but also for the teachers because they are with that child everyday and to see him/her grieve is a difficult process. All the teacher can do is to be their for the children and to be patient. Just like every child is different, everyone’s grieving process is also different. The teachers are not only there to teach and send the kids home after a long day. They grow bonds with the students and families so that is why it is so difficult for the teachers. Again, I am sorry but I am glad you have learned so much from this quarter and had great observations. Good Luck to you in the future! -Ashley Milam

Module 4

I observed a first grade classroom at Big Hallow in Ingleside, IL. During this module I have interacted with the kids. I have tried to observe them to go along with my research paper. I have looked at what the students challenges were and what appeared to be easy with the students.

While watching the students and observing them it came clear what the struggles were and what came easy. The students all varied. The reason behind this is because of every child is different. I also interacted with the teacher and asked her tips for how to make sure that developmentally appropriate practices, DAP, are used in the classroom. Making sure that DAP is used in the classroom, she said that one must observe the children. The teachers will have to see how the students act and how they are with certain assignments and material. Getting to know the students one on one also helps a lot and should be done on a regular basis.

Working with children and their families is going to be tough. In my experiences one must try to build a relationship with the families. The families are with the students after you have had them all day. Having the communication is going to be beneficial for the students because the relationship can give advice to one another.

Some families just leave all the work and teaching to be done in the classroom. Some families are too busy to be involved with the children’s life in the classroom. Other families are so in tune and want to know anything and everything that has to do with their child. As a teacher one needs to realize that the students are their children and even if the parents are hard to work with, you need to give it all you can to help the students and the parents.

One of the insights that I have gained from this experience and the observations is to work with the children as much as you can. Some of the home lives are not the best and if one person can guide the students and care from them it is so important! The students need at least one person to go to and if you are it then that it so amazing! Some of the parents are so busy now days trying to support their families and do not have time to even ask how their day was because the students are already sleeping by the time their parents are home. Work one on one with the students because it will help them for the future.

Another insight that I have gained form the observations is that observing the students throughout the day is so important. While observing the students, the teachers are able to find out what their appropriate practices are. The teachers are also able to see if something is wrong that day and if everything is okay with the students. Depending on if something happened the night before or over the weekend may cause the students to act up and act out.

Module 3

I have interacted with are the students to see how the teacher’s and the assistants are reacting and how they may approach the DAP. Having the developmentally appropriate practices will help the children in their future studies. The special learning insights that I have learned is to really pay attention to the students. The best way to figure out what the child needs is to watch them throughout the day. By observing the child it tells one what they need and what they do not need. This is even for if the child needs more attention then their other peers. Getting the community involved into the students lives from their parents may also help them succeed because they are willing to help the students and the teachers, depending on the day and what is needed.

Module 1

The insights that I have been gained from the interview are that this teacher focuses a lot on the children that are in her classroom. She does have assistants in her classroom but still find time to have one on one and work with the children individually. She realizes that every child is different and that’s what made me think of DAP. Developmentally appropriate practices will also help me in my own classroom and have the idea that I need to find lessons that work with every child.
By my area of interest I think that I am going to focus on is observation to help the children get appropriate practices. By working one on one or just observing throughout the day will help get an idea of who is behind and who is advancing in different lessons.

Module 2

Who I interacted with during my time is with kindergarten teacher. I learned a lot from her because she has an integrated kindergarten classroom. She has other teachers in the room and is being helped a lot. She showed me a lot how to have DAP in the classroom since all of her students are at different levels from one another. Working one on one is an excellent way of helping those children succeeds day to day. The community seems to be so outgoing and concerning for the children and I absolutely love that. I have observed in other classrooms where it just doesn’t seem like the teachers want to be there.
